RIDT Funded Mobile Dental Unit - 10th Anniversary

RIDT funded Mobile Dental Unit – 10th Anniversary

2025 marked the 10th anniversary of the Mobile Dental Unit (MDU) first began operating, an initiative launched by the Dean of the Faculty of Dental SurgeryProf. Nikolai Attard, with the support of RIDT (the Research Innovation and Development Trust) and a number of dedicated sponsors.

Over the past decade, the MDU has been bringing oral health care directly into the heart of our communities, travelling to different localities across the island to offer thousands of people free dental check-ups.

This outreach service not only benefits the public but also strengthens research and teaching by engaging dental students with the realities of oral health in Maltese society, while encouraging greater social awareness and responsibility.

A free dental check-up involves a comprehensive oral examination, where dentists and dental students (under supervision) assess the health of the teeth and gums, check for early signs of decay, gum disease, or oral cancer, and provide advice on maintaining good oral hygiene. Patients also receive guidance on nutrition and preventive care, along with free smoking cessation support to help improve both oral and overall health.

Through this initiative, the public is strongly encouraged to make use of the service, helping to detect problems early, prevent complications, and promote a healthier lifestyle.
