President of Malta visits researchers at the University of Malta

 

On Tuesday 18 March 2025, Her Excellency, The President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, visited the University of Malta. The main aim of this visit, organised by the Communications Department of the University of Malta in collaboration with the Research, Innovation and Development Trust of the University of Malta (RIDT), was for The President to meet researchers from different spheres and to be informed about the latest developments in the different fields of research.

President Myriam Spiteri Debono was greeted by the Rector, Prof Alfred Vella, and the Pro-Rector for research, Prof Simon Fabri. The first part of the visit took place in the Council Room and consisted of a speech by the Rector and a presentation by Prof Fabri on the current investment in research at the University of Malta. This was followed by another presentation by Prof Nicholas Vella and Prof Eleanor Scerri on new findings by the University of Malta’s Archaeological Scientists and how this research is anticipated to have a global impact.

During the second part of the visit, The President visited the laboratories of the department of Molecular Medicine and Biobanking. Here, President Spiteri Debono was greeted by Prof Richard Muscat. She then visited the Stroke Labs and met researchers Dr Christian Zammit (Head of the Department of Anatomy) and Translational Neuroscientist Prof Mario Valentino.

To conclude her visit, President Spiteri Debono visited the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) currently on visit at the University of Malta. This part of the visit was coordinated by Prof Melissa Formosa.

The President was very impressed with what she learnt from her visit and promised her support to the researchers, the University of Malta and RIDT in their efforts to support research and in making research more known to the public and to Maltese society.
